Theodora and Daphne, 2023

Calypso Efkarpidis

coloured pencil on paper (60.9cm x 45.6cm)

My artwork Theodora and Daphne depicts my younger sister (Daphne) meeting my great aunt (Theodora) for the first time. My great aunt who lives in a rural town in Greece is 93 years old and the last living sibling of 10. We were able to meet her in her village and listen for three hours as she told us her stories entirely in Greek. The portrait is based on a photograph taken by my cousin while we were there. I hope the image reflects the difference between these two generations and their stories as well as the similarities in personality.
